I really believe volunteers are the superheroes of our world. Here are a few reasons why. If you volunteer, hail! If you’re not, I hope you strongly consider volunteering in some way.
Both volunteer. This might seem obvious, but did you ever really think of any of your favourite superheroes as volunteers?
Both have day jobs besides their volunteering work. You do have to pay the bills, right? It does help if you love your day job though, so it’s double pleasure.
Both give their skills and abilities to make a difference where it counts. Still, it would be nice to be able to fly to your field.
Both have secret identities. Okay, so maybe it’s not so secret in voluntary work, but I think most people tend not to know so much about what we do.
Both have big, bad villains to fight. You know who they are, from The Joker and Dr Octopus and Doomsday to poverty and disease and ignorance.
Both save the world. Or at least, some little corner of it. (Hey, even Batman/Bruce Wayne was pretty much focused on Gotham City, right?)
Both fight crazy obstacles to keep doing their work. Obstacles as big and powerful as government and red tape, or as pervasive as stigma and misunderstanding. Or as simple – and overwhelming – as fatigue.
Both go home tired – and fulfilled. Like I said in my last post, the best kind of tired is the one that comes after meaningful work. Since we’ll all get tired sometime, we might as well be fulfilled, right?
Both are in short supply. Need I say more?
I hope you’re a volunteer. I really do.
